Curriculum Intent
The aims of our science curriculum are:
- A high quality, carefully structured curriculum across the school, which inspires curiosity and fascination for natural phenomena in the world around us.
- Develop children's understanding through engaging hands-on scientific enquiry to better understand the science of today and for the future.
- Developing scientific thinking, analysis and practice, developing an accurate and clear scientific vocabulary.
- Inclusive approach which supports children of all abilities to achieve to their full potential within the science curriculum.
Curriculum Implementation
At South Borough Primary School, science is taught weekly in every year group. Our school works collaboratively with other Swale Academies Trust schools to provide a rigorous scheme of work in accordance with the National Curriculum. Teachers provide all children with engaging, practical and theoretical sessions which give every child the opportunity to engage in scientific theory and gain deeper knowledge and skills at all stages.
During Science lessons, pupils work both independently and in groups towards a common goal. They will explore the three main branches of study within science: Biology, Physics and Chemistry, and will gain an in-depth understanding of working scientifically through carefully planned learning sequences which allow children to build upon their knowledge as the lessons progress. This will be taught with an emphasis on a hands-on approach to learning, where possible, to ensure that the curriculum is engaging, relevant and memorable.
In Key Stage 1, the National Curriculum clearly states the areas and skills for progression for both years 1 and 2. This is reflected in the trust’s scheme for the key stage. The curriculum for Key stage 2 is taught using a two-year cycle which teaches the Year 3 and 4 areas of study across lower key stage 2 and the Year 5 and 6 areas of study in a second two-year cycle across upper key stage 2. Working scientifically is covered throughout the whole programme of study. Teachers strive to ignite a passion and excitement which will encourage children to develop their interest in science and the world around them. The children’s progress is regularly assessed by the class teacher to ensure the children receive a thorough understanding of each unit of science throughout their time at school.
Within the planning, there are recommendations for enrichment activities which include trips to farms and other events, as well as engaging the children’s imaginations through caring for plants and animals within the classroom. Use of theatre workshops and visitors further enhance the learning opportunities within science.
